ZERON100 and AL-6XN Alloy | RolledAlloys supplied ZERON 100 and AL-6XN into the most aggressive downhole, topside and downstream environments. ZERON 100 was specifically engineered towithstand the extreme temperatures, pressures and sour service that exist inthe North Sea. With NORSOK approval ZERON100 has been used successfully for pumps, tooling, and piping systems. BothAL-6XN and ZERON 100 have been utilized for entire piping systems, tubular, tooling and topside platforms at B.P., Shell, Marathon Oil, and Exxon Mobil. |
Topside Applications | Offshoreoil rigs must maintain structural integrity and limit corrosion in a widevariety of seawater applications. Duplex stainless steels and highnickel-molybdenum alloys are used in place of austenitic stainless steels, which are prone to general pitting, stress cracking, and have limitedstrength. Flaretips and other high temperature applications utilize alloys, such as RA330,RA 253 MA, and 310 stainless steel. Both RA330 and RA 253 MA show oxidationresistance up to 2100°F. |
Topside Applications Applied Materials | ZERON100 super duplex and 2205 duplex are often used in offshore oil rigs, pressure vessels and cyclones. ZERON 100, for example has been used inseawater fire protection systems by Marathon Oil, Mobil, B.P., Shell and manyothers. AL-6XNdisplays outstanding resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, and has been implemented in LNG vaporizers, fire protection systems, as wellas a variety of other offshore Oil and Gas production equipment. Alloy625 has good stress rupture strength up to 1800°F, resists oxidation and hasexcellent resistance to chloride-ion SCC and crevice corrosion. Applicationsinclude marine and chemical processing environments, in forms such as seals, fasteners, heat exchangers, valves, steam lines, and exhaust ducts. RA253 MA is currently being used in calciner shells to recover the hydrocarbonsin the "mud" to lubricate oil drilling equipment. During the soil extractionfor oil drilling, diesel fuel is used to flush out the shale and then it isrecovered and reused. RA 253 MA is used in the soil extraction as well as thediesel fuel recovery. |
Downhole Applications | Thereduced amount of available crude oil has increased the difficulty of oildrilling, creating a need for deeper wells with more demanding conditions. The downhole portion includes the use of alloy 718, 17-4 stainless steel andZERON 100 super duplex stainless steel. 718is stocked in both an annealed form to meet AMS 5662 as well as a specificaging treatment to meet the higher mechanical properties required by API 6Aalong with the hardness limitations from NACE MR-0175. 17-4stainless steel (solution treated and double aged) is the preferred alloy forstems, and shafts, and is often used in valve internals. It has high strengthand corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel in manyenvironments. AChristmas tree structure is a common form of well head application. 718 NACEmakes particularly useful oil tools and shafts due to its high strength andcorrosion resistance, excellent sub zero toughness and resistance to hydrogenembrittlement. |
